Date: March 24 - 27, 2026

Organized by BRIC-NIPGR, PLAZI, CODATA INDIA and #semanticClimate

Introduction and Context

The workshop brought together researchers, students, and open science practitioners to explore modern approaches in biodiversity informatics, semantic technologies, and FAIR data practices. The workshop focused on transforming biodiversity literature and scientific information into reusable, machine-readable knowledge resources for research and policy applications.

Participants engaged in interactive sessions on literature-based data extraction, semantic annotation, biodiversity knowledge organization, and open science workflows. The workshop also emphasized collaborative and community-driven approaches for strengthening biodiversity and climate research infrastructures.

This CODATA India led Plazi workshop responds to a shared global and national priority: How do we systematically liberate biodiversity data from publications and enable its responsible reuse; combining human expertise, open science principles, and AI-driven tools?

Objectives

Overall Aim

To build national capacity in India for the extraction, FAIRification, and reuse of biodiversity data from scientific literature by combining Plazi’s globally proven workflows with India-led expertise in AI-based knowledge extraction, data science, and biodiversity informatics, under the umbrella of CODATA’s data stewardship principles.
